Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and a sacred obligation upon every eligible Muslim. It is not only an act of worship but a powerful system of social responsibility designed to reduce poverty, uplift the needy, and purify wealth.
During the blessed month of Ramadan, the rewards of good deeds multiply, making it the most preferred time to fulfill your Zakat obligation.
At Skill Development Foundation (SDF), we ensure that your Zakat is handled with complete transparency, dignity, and strict Shariah compliance, reaching those who truly deserve it.
The word Zakat means purification and growth. In Islam, Zakat purifies a person’s wealth and heart from greed and selfishness while strengthening compassion and social balance.
“And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:110)
Zakat is different from Sadaqah, which is voluntary charity. Zakat is compulsory and must be given according to specific rules defined in the Quran and Sunnah.
“Islam is built upon five pillars: faith, prayer, Zakat, fasting in Ramadan, and Hajj.”
(Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

Zakat becomes obligatory when:
1. Your wealth reaches the Nisab
2. You own it for one full lunar year (Hawl)
3. The wealth is surplus to basic needs
The standard Zakat rate is 2.5% on eligible assets.
To make it easy for donors, Skill Development Foundation provides a Zakat Calculator to help estimate your Zakat according to Islamic principles.
Assets usually included:
1. Cash & savings
2. Bank balance
3. Gold and silver
4. Business inventory

Zakat on gold becomes obligatory when it reaches the gold Nisab.
Silver has a lower Nisab compared to gold, which makes more people eligible for Zakat.
“Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah – give them tidings of a painful punishment.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:34)
Allah ﷻ has clearly defined the eligible recipients of Zakat in the Quran:
“Zakat expenditures are only for the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and for the stranded traveler.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:60)
